Premier League relegation battle 2018

Though only a couple of gameweeks are left, the relegation battle is still in its full flow. 13 teams look safe but all below Watford are under tremendous pressure. Let’s look at the chances of all the teams trying to stay up:

Brighton: Played-35, Points-37
Fixtures: Man Utd(H), Man City(A), Liverpool(A)
Though they are 5 clear of 18th placed Southampton, their daunting list of fixtures might cause a hiccup or two. Even then the gap might prove enough as they have atleast 2 more points than their relegation rivals. If all their rivals end the season on a high, they might be in trouble but that is unlikely. Chances of surviving: 80%

West Ham: Played-35, Points-35
Fixtures: Leicester(A), Man Utd(H), Everton(H)
West Ham last won away on 13th Janurary. West Ham haven’t beaten a top 6 side this season. West Ham lost 4-0 last time against Everton. These stats make it tough for West Ham to even get a point in their remaining games and that might mean that they are going down! Chances of surviving: 50%

Huddersfield: Played-35, Points-35
Fixtures: Man City(A), Chelsea(H), Arsenal(H)
The Terriers have a bad goal difference
(Only Stoke have a worse goal difference) and have a tough list of fixtures coming up. City have no sign of letting down, Chelsea want to win to have a chance for qualifying for the champions league and Wenger would love to win his last PL game. Chances of surviving:40%

Swansea: Played-35, Points-33
Fixtures: Bournemouth(A), Southampton(H), Stoke(H)
Swansea’s remaining fixtures make them strong candidates for avoiding the drop even thigh they have 3 points from their last 6 games. A victory against either of Stoke or Southampton might be enough to ensure that they finish above the team they have beaten. Chances of surviving: 60%

Southampton: Played-35, Points-32
Fixtures: Everton(A), Swansea(A), Man City(H)
Southampton have found some form and have 4 points from their last 2 outings. Even then, the Saints last won away in the PL on 3rd February and last beat City in 2016. 4 more points might be enough but looking at these stats, Southampton might be going down! Chances of surviving: 40%

Stoke: Played-36, Points-30
Fixtures: Crystal Palace(H), Swansea (A)
Having played an extra game compared to the teams above them and still 3 away from safety, their good fixtures and drawing form (they have drawn their last 3 games) don’t enhance their chances. Two wins are needed but they would be tough to get. Chances of surviving: 35%

West Brom: Played-36, Points-28
Fixtures: Tottenham Hotspur(H), Crystal Palace(A)
Though Darren Moore has created the slightest chance of West Brom staying in the PL by earning 8 points in West Brom’s last 4 games, even 2 wins wouldn’t be enough if Swansea get 2 points(out of 3 games, mind you) or Saints 3 points or Stoke 6 points. Chances of surviving: 10%

Final Verdict: Only a miracle of miracles can ensure West Brom stay up or Brighton go down. One win from among Leicester, Man Utd or Everton should all but mathematically secure West Ham’s survival. The case is similar with Huddersfield but they face 3 of the big 6 in their final 3 games. Swansea’s impressive fixtures should be enough for their avoiding the drop. Southampton’s goal difference may be a crucial point in who survives and who doesn’t. Stoke might go down as their goal difference is torrid and they have a game lesser in hand. I think the Saints’ and the Potters’ trips to the Swans will decide who stays and who doesn’t. To end, according to me, West Brom, Stoke and Southampton will go down
