Sakshi Malik – India’s First Bronze Medal Winner at Rio Olympics 2016

Sakshi Malik is an Indian freestyle wrestler. At the RIO Olympics 2016, she won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category, becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics. Sakshi Malik: The icon who broke free The 23-year-old from Haryana  Sakshi Malik became the first woman wrestler from India to bag an  Olympic medal she is a silver medallist at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and bronze winner at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, earned a dramatic come-from-behind win over Kyrgysztan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova to script history.


Sakshi was one of three female wrestlers to qualify for the Rio Olympics, Sakshi is only the fourth Indian woman to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari, Mary Kom and Saina Nehwal. Sakshi now stands as an icon for Indian women’s athletes. Sakshi Malik reached the Repechage rounds of the women’s freestyle 58kg event and made most of the second life as she outplayed Mongolian wrestler Orkhon in the Rd 2 contest 12-3 to advance to the bronze-medal match.
