8 groups of Fifa World Cup 2018

Group A: Hosts Russia are involved in a group which has one of the best players of the world right now and two of the deadliest strikers in the world. Egypt would hope that Salah stays fit for all their games, without which qualifying might be very tough. Uruguay are the favourites to qualify through and Saudi might just be playing for pride. My predictions: Russia could well go through to the last 16 with the help of home support along with Uruguay, who would top the group.

Group B: It should be a no brainer, shouldn’t it? Portugal and Spain are clear favourites to go through with Morocco and Iran battling for third spot. Portugal’s recent form would be a huge boost but they would have to win against Spain to top the group and avoid Uruguay (most probably) in the last 8. My predictions: Spain should beat Portugal and top the group. They have more experience and have a better squad.

Group C: France might not find it as easy as they thought it would be. Denmark and Australia are capable of producing football of great quality and Peru might shock a team or two, like they shocked Uruguay in the qualifiers. France need to be non-complacent as topping the group would be necessary to avoid Group D’s winner in the last 16. My predictions: France qualify first along with Denmark.

Group D: Called the ‘group of death’, Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria all have a chance to go through with the favourites Argentina. In fact, Argentina themselves might find it tough to qualify as the other 3 teams would be very determined to go through. My predictions: The ‘group of death’ is always tough to predict but I have a feeling Argentina might finish up top with Croatia in second and Iceland and Nigeria might just miss out.

Group E: Brazil should go through but who would follow? Switzerland have one of the brightest midfield talents in the world in Shaqiri and won their last friendly 6-0. Serbia have experienced pros on the likes of Matić, Ivanović and Kolarov whereas Costa Rica have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Keylor Navas. My predictions: Brazil top the group with relative ease and Serbia just qualify.

Group F: Germany, the defending champions, go into this group as clear favourites but again who joins them into the round of 16? Mexico have World Cup experience and so do Sweden whereas Korea have a very talented, young prospect in Spurs midfielder Son. My predictions: Germany go through with relative ease and the youth of South Korea would prevail over the experience of Germany and Sweden.

Group G: Like Group B, there are two favorites and two party-spoilers. Belgium have played some of the best football in the last couple of years whereas England have shown glimpses of great form. Panama and Tunisia would be very pleased to play this tournament but that should be it. My predictions: Even though England are an inconsistent team, they might edge out Belgium and top the group.

Group H: The group lacking a footballing superpower is about individuals. Whether it be Lewandowski from Poland or Rodríguez from Colombia or Mané from Senegal or Honda from Japan, this group has been about superstars who have helped their team achieve the World Cup dream. My predictions: Colombia top the group and Poland come second because they have a few other quality players in Falcao and Milik respectively.
